Hollywood films and stars have long induced a following of fans who relegated these creations as idols, cult figures, or classical favorites. But a phenomenon exists that takes this initiative several notches higher, perhaps into the realm of the ridiculous and the absurd, into that of a religion. A faithful flock has been growing that spreads the faith of Jediism - based on the Jedi code in the film Star Wars.
George Lucas' legacy has produced a level of lunacy unprecedented even by Hollywood standards. Not even the eccentric Scientology can compare with the determined advocacy of its flock. Followers are not cowed by hoots and insults and view the religious intolerance as a passing phase. There are members who take the faith very seriously and also those who joined merely to annoy other religious sects, but the spread of its adherents may be indicative of brain virus that hastens madness of the fanatical variety, or craziness that is hysterical in its ludicrous practice.
There are 70,000 declared Jedi faithful in Australia, 53,000 in New Zealand, 20,000 in Canada, and 390,127 in England and Wales. Thus far, no one has claimed that this heralds the second coming of Jesus Christ nor have its detractors say that it is the emergence of the ant-Christ; but a Labour Member of Parliament for Copeland in Cumbria declared himself the first Jedi MP in the context of debates on the Incitement to Religious Hatred Bill. While the MP averred that instead of his maiden speech being taken as a serious statement of faith, but a joke, Conservatives sought to exclude Jedi Knights explicitly from the protection of the proposed Act. A move that betrays their regard for the Jedi Order, which reveals the confluence of logic and lunacy among lawmakers.
Recently, a man dressed up as Darth Vader, using a black garbage bag for a cape, assaulted the founders of Britain's first Jedi Church. He hacked founder Barney Jones, known as Jonba Hehol, with a metal crutch on the head together with his cousin who was injured in the thigh. The incident was recorded on the video set up for a light saber battle ceremony. This may well be the Order's first real case of religious intolerance from a Darth Vader wannabee who claimed drunkenness. But his intentions were apparent in that he had to wear a costume to execute the assault. It is a case of the mentally disturbed attracting the mentally and alcoholically impaired. The attacker received a suspended sentence, perhaps from a magistrate in suspended disbelief.
This "religion" may be an offshoot of an erosion of faith in the established churches, other institutions of society, and government; in their search for meaning, justice, and equality among men. Honor and integrity are valued and hungered for, but their search has led them to worship the "force" and seek to be with "it". Little do they realize that it is the force of insanity they have embraced, much like insatiably greedy businessmen and power hungry politicians have.
Its mantra is "May the force be with you". Perhaps it should be "May the Farce be with you".

oh my goodness Durano!!!
what an incredible story !!
it's hard to believe that so many people could be converted to this ridiculous religion...
what is the world coming to ???
Durano, Good Post...I am convinced, many people out there have lost their way and like Little Bo Peep's sheep. "Leave them alone and they'll come home....." The established Religions can't fill the void that exists in some peoples souls, and so they search....stay well.....
Hello Kim,
The world is getting crazier, madness brought about by failure to cope. :-)
I have always maintained that not all patients inside mental institutions are insane, that some of them are perfectly sane. By the same token, not everyone outside in the world roaming free are sane, some are acutely insane. So be careful who you deal with.
Some bloggers we get in touch with, and even become friends with, might actually be insane! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I think I'll take my Prozac now, I seem to be losing something. :-)--Durano Done!
Hi Tapline,
Either the established religions can't fill the void or they have driven these people away, one way or the other.
On the other hand, there is such a thing as free will. Unless they are really deranged, their choice has been made competently. But why in the world will they choose this if they were competent? But hey, maybe we should allow them that freedom and not be intolerant of their choice. :-) --Durano, done!
That's funny! And on second thought, kinda weird and disturbing.
People take things way too seriously sometimes!
Hi Zhu,
They take things too seriously that they lose their minds in the process.
I may be crazy about several things but I don't think I'd want to go overboard like this! :-) -- Durano, done!
I totally understand people trying to find a more meaningful and valid faith or ideology to follow, but to try to turn a fictional sect from a movie series into something real, and THEN TRY TO LIVE BY ITS EDICTS AND BELIEFS????? Insane.
People have really and truly lost their minds!!! WTH.
I would love to meet one of these modern day Jedi. I could only imagine what the conversation would be like! ;)
Kudos to you Durano. That was a Great post my friend you deserve the thinking man's award for that one.

lol Durano
what's that saying..
sticks and stones...
at least bloggers can keep that motto in mind when blogging :)
I agree about the sane people in mental institutions and that's been going on for centuries eh !!
Hi Fitness Diva,
Judging by your reactions, you might be challenged to a light saber duel if you do get to meet one of them.
I suggest you hone up on your boxing skills and train real hard.
On the other hand, why duel with an insane person? That would only make you look crazier than they are! And don't attempt to talk them out of it, they will only say that the "force is not with you". LOL! :-) --Durano, done!
Hi DD2,
Thanks for the kind words. I really don't know if I should take such things in humor or take these seriously, but the feeling I get is that some people will do anything to satisfy a felt need. Whether it's funny or not really depends where you're coming from.
But now that the Church has declared that life forms and other intelligent beings may exist in space, and that they are our brothers because they were also created by God, the Jedi faith might just be another name for it. So, we could then prepare ourselves to call on Pope George Lucas for bringing this Religion from a "land long, long, ago, and far, far away" to the understanding of us earthlings. :-) Durano, done!
Hello Kim,
Those in mental institutions should not be of much concern. It is those outside that we should be wary of. :-)
There is this woman in the US who pretended to be a 16 year old boy, who succeeded in developing a cyber relationship with a 15 year old girl she didn't like. The woman then broke off the relationship and wrote very disparaging e-mails against the hapless girl - who then hanged herself.
So, words can hurt you to death! :-) But I guess that depends also on the psychological make-up of the person and strength of character.
For all we know, the internet and blogging is distorting our perception of the world we live in and we are all going insane! Pretty soon computers will be banned! We will all go back to the typewriter and snail mail, scented stationaries, pen and ink, licking stamps, postage. And if that becomes expensive, we will have to use homing pigeons, or heaven forbid, smoke signals. Arrrrrrgh!
What would the world be then? No matter. May the force be with you. :-)
Have a pleasant weekend! :-) --Durano, done!
I am a Jedi. The faith of the Jedi I can assure you is real. Visit www.Jedisanctuary.org to learn more. The Jedi, followers of "The Way" have no doctrine to control us. There is the Force and true Jedi acknowledge the SOURCE as the creator of the Force but do not foolishly attempt to give it a name or create mind control systems to support slavery to the names given.Your sarcasim only exposes your prejudice and underlying FEAR. Stop living a lie. Free your mind and awaken to the truth of who you are and discover the only question that is relative to your "life". Who are you really? May you awaken soon. May the Force be with you. NAMASTE!
I am a real Jedi and I do believe in 'The Force'. Not the fictional force in the movies but the real Force described in the book The Field By Lynne McTaggart. I am the Sr. Pastor of http://TempleOfTheJediOrder.org Our Creed and Doctrine are NOT based on the Star Wars movies but on the religious philosophies that Mr. Lucas studied as background in creating the fictional force. Joseph Campbell and Alan Watts are strong influences. Gentle Readers, Br. John will bless all your criticisms, insults and curses as long as you've actually read the front page of our site and see what we believe as opposed to what you think we believe. There are different denominations in Jediism with radically different beliefs. Your article is like a book review without you having read the book. Far from discrediting Jediism you've only managed to prove you have not done your homework. May The Force Be With You and God Bless.
I would also like to point out that the incident in the UK (Wales)is a bad example, may I also suggest you 'research' that 'Church' perhaps request documentation and make a judgement for yourselves at what they truly are about.
I too am a Jediist of the same church s Br John - I also live in the UK. All those 'numbers' quoted are from national census, many if not most were stating Jedi as some kind of joke and snub to the 'system' of governments. Again, some research on that topic will reveal the truth of the matter.
At the end of the day, my faith and beliefs are exactly that, MINE. So as long as it causes no harm to others why the hell should be so seemingly bothered about a few 'crackpots' who's only intention and wish is for a better a better society for all (no matter what your faith, beliefs etc).
I might also add that many followers of the faith are also active service personnel for the armed forces of many countries, the faith brings comfort to them, once again, they are doing no one any harm with their beliefs so why should any of the negative respondents here particularly care.
For my own thoughts, I wonder of you in fact have something to fear from our faith?
So whilst I firmly believe in everyone is entitled to their own opinion, it would help (especially yourself) if you got your facts right in the first place. I assure you ignorance is not bliss.
May Your God(s) Go With You and thank your for your time.

My orientation is that of a management consultant. I am naturally drawn towards change for as long as it is sustainable and possesses real long term benefits. If we have to change by going back to basics like organic food, less transfat, zero carbon emissions, I'm all for it.
There are many things we have been made to accept, drummed into our brains since we were kids; that these were true, unchangeable, and permanent. Well nothing is permanent and anything can be changed. What was true before may be uncovered today for the phoniness that it was and is. I keep a questioning attitude and a persistent orientation, balanced by a positive outlook.
I love to laugh and enjoy life, and hope the pain brought about by what is wrong in this world is somehow diluted by this merriment.
These are actually a part of the real world Jediist ideals, as it's been said, if you had bothered to truly research Jediism before launching on a rather pathetic and misguided (based on lack of information) tirade of inaccuracies based on here-say, you would have realised you have unwittingly more in common with a Jediist than you realise (and probably will ever dare to confess)
